This year when we had to stay at home I played lots of games. Two of my favourite games are chess and Battleships. Both have a square board split into little squares in rows and columns which are called ranks and files in chess. The chess board has 8 ranks and 8 files making 64 squares. The files are labelled with the letters A–H and the ranks are labelled with numbers 1–8. The Battleships game has 10 columns and 10 rows making 100 squares. The columns are labelled with the letters A–J and the rows are labelled with numbers 1–10. You can give every square a name with one letter and one number such as A1. This maths secret code name for a square is called its co-ordinates. You can let your partner know which square you mean much more easily than trying to describe the position using words. Can you see the Maths Inside sticker on the chess board square D3?
