Music is an integral part of our lives. I love music and play string instruments and study music theory, Music and Math are related in many ways. Both Music and Math use patterns. Certain pieces of music are more popular due to their mathematical structure. The frequency of sound is related to Math — Pythagoras the Greek philosopher and mathematician found out that sounds can be made up with different weights and vibrations. The pitch of a string instrument can be controlled by its length. Shorter string, higher pitch and vice versa. Reading Music is related to Math — numbers tell us a lot about a piece of music. Time signatures in music is like fractions. Notes and rests in music have numerical connections. Musicians need to understand the value of these fractions and notes to count music correctly.
