A flickering candle, falling sand, fluttering flower petals. The commonality? They are all finite. Each a symbol of time passing by and a reminder that existence is there to be cherished and appreciated.
The maths inside:
A candle burns at a rate of about 0.1 g/min, releasing heat at 80 W. The light produced is approximately 13 lumens, for a luminous efficacy of about 0.16 lumens per watt.
The thermal structure of a flame is incredibly complex and comprises of extremely steep temperature gradients. On average, the flame temperature is 1,000 °C.
A sand timer's upper and lower bulbs are symmetrical so it measures the same time duration regardless of orientation. The specific duration of time is determined by factors including the size of the bulb, the volume and coarseness of the particulate matter and the neck width.
Most species of roses have five petals. The petals are divided into two distinct lobes. Beneath the petals are five sepals. Roses have a lifespan of 7 days once they are cut.
Each photo represents the passage of time.
The candle flickers and, as it does so, the wax melts and dwindles into a solemn wick.
The sand rushes through the neck until, eventually, it stops.
Each part of the pattern is a symbol that human existence is fleeting, and that the "sands of time" will run out for everyone.
'Until the last petal falls'...
