alt text
Turtles have hexagon shapes all over them called scutes. Turtles have these hexagonal scutes for a few reasons. Efficient packing is one, hexagons are one of the most efficient shapes for covering a surface with minimal gaps. Hexagons often appear in structures like honey comb because they are strong and efficient. The scutes on a turtle help creat a strong, continuous, protective surface for a turtles shell. The scutes also help distribute pressure and stress evenly across the turtles shell, this makes the shell strong and resilient. As a turtle grows its scutes grow too. The individual hexagonal shapes allow the shell to evenly over time.
The arrangement of scutes gives the turtle both a durable aemir and flexibility for growth, which is crucial for its survival.
