I noticed there are lots of different shapes and patterns on the soles of shoes. I wondered why that is? Shapes on the soles help provide grips and scientists have tested to find the best shapes for grip. They used ideas from Kirigami, like origami but shapes are cut not folded, to create soles where shapes pop up when they bend to provide grip. They got inspired as well by nature; cheetah’s claws, snake’s scales and fish scales all provide grip. It was the triangle shape of snake’s scales that was the best for grip. So our shoes are inspired by snakes!
