I like to watch the kayakers in the loch at the Falls of Lora. The waves are only there when the tides are big, and water moves fast, in and out of the sea. But why don’t these waves move forward like waves at the beach? I found out these are called standing waves. They appear to stand still because one current of water is going forwards, and one current is going backwards. The tide is going in, but the loch is still trying to come out. The kayaker is paddling but going nowhere. It makes me think about people on a treadmill in a gym.
