Dancing into Shape (the 'why' of shapes)

When I do Highland Dancing there is a lot of maths involved in what I do. One of them is geometry. Without it, dancers wouldn’t be able to make shapes with their body! Dancers need to think about being parallel to the floor with their body and making sure that their legs are straight (180 degrees). The rhythm of the music needs to be synchronised with the dancers movement, which involves counting and patterns. One of the dances, the Reel (Hullichan) is to do with shapes, it forms a square, as you’re dancing two people step back and the others dance in, at the end it forms a straight line. So… it transforms shapes!
