Not all ways of keeping a record of the climate have to be high tech. A simple way to tell what the climate was like in the past is to check the colour and thickness of the tree rings found on the log. Not only can these tree rings let us know what the weather conditions were like that specific year but they can also tell us weather events that happened such as droughts or flooding. Also notice that the tree rings are arranged geometrically.
