Math is everywhere around us, including waves. Waves are created when wind blows over water and transfers energy to the water surface and creates waves. The speed of the wind, the distance the wind travels over the water and the length of time the waves travel for all contribute to the height and width of the waves. (Wind speed x wind duration x fetch distance) As the water becomes shallower, the waves rise, and eventually its potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. This is why you can get wave power. The mathematical equation representing one of the simplest waves is v = fλ, using the scientific symbols, or speed of the wave = frequency of the wave x wavelength of the wave.
