This is a traffic light that is situated outside of my school. Traffic lights are incredibly important as they control the flow of traffic. Traffic lights work using sensors that detect vehicles. One type of sensor that could be used is an infrared sensor, which works by either detecting infrared energy emitted by vehicles or by emitting infrared signals that can be disrupted by vehicles. When the button is pressed by someone who wants to cross, the infrared sensor starts to detect vehicles, and that plays into how long you must wait until the light goes red and you can cross. The more vehicles there are, the more signals that are sent, delaying when the light would go red. There is an impressive amount of circuitry within the traffic light, and therefore maths.
