Wind Turbines (the why of shapes)

On a recent trip to Whitelee Windfarm, I asked my mum and dad why the wind turbines have three blades. After a little research and a visit to the visitor centre we found the answer. If a wind turbine only has two blades it will wobble when it is turned to face the wind, whereas with three blades the turbine can rotate smoothly because when one blade is pointing up, the other two are pointing at an angle. So that is ‘why’ wind turbines are this shape!
